Person receives a blood pressure check by a gloved hand. Headline discusses millennials' hidden health issues.

I recently was interviewed by The Herald News about what's driving the alarming death rates in the US millennial population. While there are various factors, one of the most troublesome facts is that nearly two-thirds of deaths in this cohort would not happen if these individuals lived in many other comparable, high-income countries.

There is a widening U.S. mortality disadvantage, and we need to explore all opportunities for intervention:

1) What are other nations doing that we are not?

2) What are their policy solutions?

Ultimately, we need to continue prioritizing accessible, routine care through: 1) comprehensive screening & diagnostics; 2) affordable mental health; and 3) subscribing to the foundations of lifestyle medicine -- nutrition; physical activity; stress management; sleep; social connection; and risky substance avoidance.

In my practice, I am seeing millennial health trends shifting toward high-tech, proactive prevention strategies to counter the rising rates of health challenges facing these people. Only time will tell if long-term trajectory change is attainable.
